Why did Meta switch to Slack?
Meta did not pick Slack because employees preferred it. Its AI chief told staff that Slack is the strongest platform for AI agents.
On its own, a company changing its chat tool is dull. Firms swap collaboration software all the time. What makes this one worth a look is the reason Meta gave.
According to an internal memo reported by Business Insider, Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang told employees that Slack is "the strongest platform available today for agents." He pointed to its conversational interface, its developer tools and its large ecosystem of outside integrations.
Read that again. Meta did not decide its employees liked Slack better. It chose the platform partly because AI agents can do more inside it. That is a smaller sentence with much larger implications than another Slack versus Teams argument.
Why was workplace software always built around the person at the screen?
For decades, software buyers asked five questions about the employee. A sixth now sits beside them: whether AI agents can work inside the tool.
For most of the history of workplace software, the buyer worked through a familiar checklist. Is it easy to use? Will employees adopt it? Does it connect to our systems? Can IT secure it? Does it save enough time to justify the price?
None of that is going away. But another question is joining the list: can our AI agents actually work here?
Slack spent years turning itself from a messaging app into a connective layer between software systems. Apps post into channels. Workflows trigger actions. Outside tools get called without leaving the conversation. That design matters far more when the thing in the conversation is not a coworker.
Anthropic has been building toward this for a while. Its Claude Tag product lets Claude join selected Slack channels as a shared agent, use connected tools, work from the conversation's context and carry tasks forward over time, all under permissions that administrators set. Salesforce, which bought Slack for about $28 billion in 2021, went further in August 2026 with an Anthropic partnership it calls Claudeforce. That deal makes Claude the default model behind Slackbot and wires it deeper into Salesforce data and workflows. Meta's move suggests buyers are starting to notice.
Why may the interface no longer be the product?
If employees ask an agent instead of opening ten apps, the software that matters is the one the agent can reach and act inside.
Picture the software inside a normal company. A CRM. An ERP. Project management. Reporting. Customer support. Document storage. Messaging. For years, vendors competed to own the screen an employee stared at all day.
Agents open another path. The employee may spend less time opening any of those apps. Instead they ask: what changed in the pipeline this week? Which customers need attention? Why did expenses jump last month? What is holding up this project? The agent reaches into several systems, pulls the information together, does the task and brings back an answer.
If that becomes normal, the most valuable software is not the one with the best interface. It is the one agents can reliably access, understand and act inside. That moves where a software company has to build its moat.

Why are integrations worth more than they look?
Every mature integration is another system an agent can reach through one governed environment. That turns a pricing-page footnote into core product.
This is why Meta's memo singled out Slack's third-party ecosystem. Connections to Salesforce, GitHub, Google Drive, ServiceNow, Jira, databases and internal tools each give an agent another place it can go. The more useful systems reachable through one governed environment, the more valuable that environment becomes as an operating layer for agents.
That flips an old habit. Integrations used to sit halfway down a pricing page, listed and forgotten. They may become one of the most important parts of what a company is buying. The best AI model in the world does a company little good if it cannot safely reach the systems where the work actually happens.

This is not really a Slack story
The easy misread is Slack versus Teams, round two. The real question is whether a system is built for a participant that is not human.
Slack is early and visible here, but it is not alone. Microsoft is building the same agent surface into Teams. Salesforce, ServiceNow and others want their platforms to be the layer agents run through. The contest is not which app employees like. It is which environment an agent can enter, understand and operate inside without a human babysitting every step.
Meta picking Slack is one data point. It is a useful one because it came from a company that builds its own AI and had no reason to flatter a vendor.
Access is only half of it. Control is the other half.
Giving agents access to business systems raises hard questions about permissions, auditing, identity and accountability. An agent that can read information is one thing. An agent that can change a customer record, approve a purchase or trigger another system is something else.
This matters more because agents are not reliable actors yet. On one recent benchmark of real business tasks, AI agents finished under 4% of them without a mistake. An environment that hands an agent broad access without scoped permissions and a full log of what it did is a liability, not a feature.
So the winners probably will not be the platforms with the longest integration list. They will be the ones that pair access with control: what an agent may touch, on whose authority and with what record of every action. That combination is about to become a real column on enterprise buying spreadsheets.
What should you add to your next software evaluation?
Add one question to the list: can an agent sign in under scoped permissions, read what it needs and act, with every step logged.
The next time your team evaluates or renews a business system, run the standard checks on price, features and usability. Then add the agent-readiness pass. Can an agent sign in with its own scoped identity? Can it reach the specific data it would need? Can it take action, and is each action recorded and possible to undo?
It is also worth auditing what you already run. Walk your current stack and mark which systems an agent could reach today under real controls, and which are still closed boxes. That map is going to shape which tools you keep and which you replace.
By 2027, IT teams will still compare features, price and usability. Somewhere on that spreadsheet, a new column will have appeared: how well does this work with our agents? Meta may have just shown the rest of us what that decision looks like.
