Broadcom could owe $43 billion on AI racks
Three of four big cloud spenders now burn cash and Microsoft borrows $25B. Questions to ask vendors.
Good morning, friends. Broadcom says it could owe up to $43 billion if AI racks it sold resell for too little. Three of the four biggest cloud spenders are now burning more cash than they make, and Microsoft is heading to the bond market. Somebody always holds the risk, and this week the filings got specific.
🏗️ AI INFRASTRUCTURE — Broadcom is backstopping up to $43 billion of AI racks
What happened: Broadcom told the SEC on October 27 it is backing a vehicle that buys AI racks and leases them to one customer. If the racks resell for less than 72.5% of what is still owed, Broadcom pays the gap, up to about $43 billion. Broadcom calls that a contingent liability it believes has a low probability of occurring, and the filing does not name the customer.
Why it matters: The $43 billion is a ceiling, not a forecast. The guarantee is about what the racks sell for, not whether the customer keeps paying. If you buy compute that runs on leased hardware, you are exposed to who owns the racks and who covers a shortfall.
What to watch: Ask your compute vendor who owns the racks, who pays if they resell low and what happens to your capacity if the lessee misses payments. Reuters reports the customer is Anthropic and deliveries start in 2027, but the filing gives no end date.
